My textile art celebrates the visual drama that is present in the natural world and aims to evoke the emotion, awe, and wonder I experience when I’m exposed to these elements. Coastal landscapes, in any form always connect me to my ‘happy place’; a place which has a calming effect on my mind and helps me connect to my inner self just as the process of making art has on my physiology.
This current series were created over the summer of 2024/2025, where there were many walks along coastal paths, observations of the ocean swells, beach fossicking and looking beyond into the forests and mountains. The memory and how I felt in these places is often my starting point, no real set plan but an instinctual choice of colour and mark making begins the creative process. I can work for hours fixed in this sense of creative calmness and meditation.
My work combines the disciplines of traditional textile crafts with the visual arts; painting, decorative arts and design. I combine ink pastel blocks and water and acrylic paint on cotton fabric, drawing objects with aqua pencils and embellishing the design with hand and machine embroidery. The artwork is framed in rattan, has wooden stretchers and stitched in with embroidery threads giving it a natural organic tribal aesthetic.
Singularly they resemble organic leaf shapes but when combined these shapes can be intertwined to make whole pieces of foreboding design sculptures.
