Shani Alexander is known for her joie de vivre, transformational painting programs, and exuberant florals and in this new exhibition she steps into a bolder, more unrestrained expression. What began during a country homestay, and a simple invitation to raid a friend’s spring garden, sparked a shedding of the old and a vivid shift in her artistic voice. Working in a makeshift studio with Mozart’s Requiem turned up loud, Shani conducted her way across each canvas, surrendering to instinct and joy. Every mark stands whole and essential; remove one and the painting collapses, add one and chaos erupts. This tension between precision and abandon, structure and wildness, forms the heartbeat of the collection. The exhibition title nods to WWII rationing and bartering, when even a small offering — a rabbit, a chicken — carried deep value. It echoes the phrase spoken when receiving something precious: “You’re welcome.” This body of work marks a powerful elevation in Shani’s practice — a celebration of colour, freedom, and the unshakeable acceptance of the woman she has become.
