Belinda Nailon - Soul Anchor, 2023
60cm H - Grey blue cylinder form with off centre neck
Through teaching ceramics, Belinda discovered a love of the pottery wheel and finds throwing a deeply meditative practice. Her works reflect this state as she tunes into the process. Being, while making, Belinda inhales her surroundings and exhales the abundance of life with rich and lush coloured glazes, natural earthy tones and voluptuous forms. Often a playful element sneaks into Belinda’s work - a cheeky comment about the challenges of being human as she reflects on her own journey in what she describes as the ‘human vessel’.
“When we crack, a little more light gets in and more of us is revealed.”
Belinda uses a Japanese firing technique called Raku. This involves removing glowing red pieces from the kiln and placing them into a metal container with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite the container is closed. She describes the process as watching transformation happen, when something changes state in a dramatic way. The firing opens a window of suspense, and the is finish created by an element of chance.
“These chance results may look like black webs, golden flashes, or smoldering abstract marks. The process individualises each piece giving it its own unique personality.”
Belinda Nailon has exhibited her work in the UK, featuring in the HIGH Fashion boutique in the Westend, and in both solo and group exhibitions in London and Australia.
